Dr. Susan Medley

Dr. Susan Medley is Music Director of the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale (PCC). She is also Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Music at Washington & Jefferson College (W&J). She served as Associate Conductor of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh from 2008-2012 and Conductor of the Junior Mendelssohn Choir from 2009-2013.

 

Dr. Medley's choirs have been recognized for excellence nationally. Her 2010 W&J Camerata Singers are the first recipients of the American Prize in Choral Performance, College/University Division. The Junior Mendelssohn Choir followed suit in 2011, winning The American Prize in Choral Performance, High School Division.

Prior to coming to the Pittsburgh area, Dr. Medley served as Associate Director of Education at Carnegie Hall in New York City and founding conductor of the Carnegie Hall High School Choral Festivals. She also held the position of Music Director of The Central City Chorus, a 60-voice community chorus that performed three annual concerts in midtown Manhattan. Medley's choral work has taken her to Malaysia, where she served as guest conductor of the 2006 Kuala Lumpur Young Singers Choral Festival and led workshops for choirs and conductors throughout the country.

 

Dr. Medley has served the profession as President of the American Choral Directors Association-Pennsylvania (2017-19), ACDA-PA Vice President (2019-2021), and various other offices.

The 2011 recipient of the PMEA District 1 Citation of Excellence, she holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting with a cognate in music theory from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, the Master of Music in accompanying from the University of Akron, and a Bachelor of Music in music education summa cum laude from the University Honors College of Kent State University. Dr. Medley studied piano with Naumburg Award-winning pianist Margaret Baxtresser. A gifted pianist, she continues to perform in recitals with other professional musicians.

 

Dr. Medley's choirs perform both internationally and nationally. PCC has performed  in Italy, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic and in Manhattan at Saint Peter's Church, known as the "Church of Jazz", and by invitation on the Great Artists Concert Series at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. Locally PCC has performed at "Fridays at the Frick," The Fourth at Fort Pitt, Three Rivers Arts Festival, and PNC Park.

 

Her W&J Camerata Singers have performed at state and regional music education conferences (through a competitive auditioning process), and by invitation at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall and the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City.
